The City of Gold Tourni - October 1997

The first modern Tourni was played in October 1997 between Emirates, British Airways, Norwich City Rejects and Fed Ex part timers at the Creek Football Club and the Forte Grand.

This Tourni was played over a 2 day period but was unfortunately hampered by the weather and the Federal Express team not turning up on the second day. This was due the whooping they received on the first day. This Tourni produced some of the Arabian Gulfs best quotes, Nick Marriott’s famous quote “they don’t like it up em” was first used muted while watching a Fed Ex vs. British Airways game. Another verbal highlight of this Tourni was the English grammar lesson given by BA’s Jon Le Quelanic - “Who is marking whom?".

After a long wait for the rain to subside and then the wait for water logged pitch to dry, business was concluded with Emirates and Norwich City rejects ending up on joint top of the league on the same points. Emirates won the tournament by having a far superior goal difference. Apparently Nick Marriott was named player of the Tourni.
